Calm Friday
- 4 minutes read - 654 wordsIt’s the end of another long week, somehow. I feel like I was on the hamster wheel this week, sorta, and getting lots done but at the same time there is a backlog of stuff to do. I guess the work never ends and that’s OK. Every day is a little different, with something interesting just around the corner. I have a lot of Latin to work on this weekend, but not quite as much as last weekend, so that’s good. I’ll try to knock it out tomorrow morning and then we’ll do something fun. And I’m doing D&D on Sunday, so that’ll be great!
I spent a good chunk of time this week working on laying the groundwork for Wii emulation on my laptop. I will be able to use Wiimotes with the Dolphin emulator, but I really need to find my Wiimotes. The wheels (I have 3 of them somehow) and Zapper peripherals are easy to find, and Nunchuks are ready at hand, but I have no idea where the actual Wiimotes went. I’ll have to look in the closet; I suspect they may be in the Wii box with the console itself. I am planning on getting rid of the console and its games, probably at a local game store, along with PSX and PS2 games. I want to see if I can get GameCube emulation to work though, since I know I’d miss Eternal Darkness; that game is rad! Anyway, Wii emulation should be great, I tested a few games and they worked wonderfully, so it definitely has the power to handle it. And if I can connect it up to the TV, well, that’s even better (I can, easily, with a HDMI cable).
Otherwise I’m having a chill Friday. I just bought Powderpaint’s new single “The Way You Want,” available here on Bandcamp. It’s fabulous just like they are! I was so excited when I saw they had released a new track. And I may watch a horror movie tonight, we’ll see. My spouse and I watched a bunch of YouTube per usual earlier.
I woke up this morning a little early and listened to a podcast. One of my favorite new ones, in fact, called Ohio Folklore, is one I’ve really been enjoying lately. The host, Melissa Davies, made a guest appearance on my friend Heather Moser’s podcast The Lore You Know (forgive me, I couldn’t find a great link for it, but search for it in your favorite podcast app). I thought she was great and sought out her podcast, and it’s been a lot of fun and really interesting. I digress. The episode I listened to this morning was about Ripley, Ohio as a terminus of the Underground Railroad. The most fascinating part of the story was about John Parker, a former Black enslaved person who was not only a conductor along the Underground Railroad, but also an extractor; he helped free a number of enslaved people right across the border in Kentucky and got them to safety. I’d never heard about him before! He wrote an autobiography as dictated to a newspaper reporter, but it was written in manuscript form only and didn’t see publication in printed form until the 1990s! You can find a copy of the book here or wherever you buy books. I definitely want to read it, it sounds heartbreaking and fascinating!
So that was a really interesting way to start my day. Ajax was a dick this morning and woke me up at 5:30, so I thought “why not listen to an hour-long podcast episode while I lie in bed?”
Anyway I don’t have a ton more to say than that. I want to write a post about autumn soon, and will probably do so for the equinox in a little less than a week, so look out for that, if nothing else.
I hope you all are doing well!
