Ramifications
A couple of days ago, I was working in my home office when I heard a loud crash outside. I thought it might have been the owners next door banging around and doing maintenance, per usual. I opened my blinds, though, and was very surprised by what I saw. A large branch, or rather, limb, of our massive ash tree out back, broke off and fell in the backyard. Thankfully, it fell towards the back of the yard, nowhere near the house. I estimate the branch at maybe 10 feet long, and it fell not only on top of our clothesline, but also the wooden structure serving as a post for it. The other side of the line is connected to a metal shed back there, and I could see the lines bending down, taut. Somehow it didn't even hit the chain-link fence separating our yard from the neighbor's on the north side, either. I took a quick picture, let my spouse know (they were in-office that morning), then went out there to disconnect the other side of the clothesline from the shed. My goal was to keep the tension & weight from potentially tearing down the shed as well. Problem solved.
The limb was way too large and heavy for me to move. So I left it there. My spouse was a little surprised when I told them, and was very curious to check it out once they got home. Otherwise, I just kinda went about my day. What else is one to do? Today it's still sitting there. We will deal with it this weekend. My spouse suggested we get a chainsaw to saw it up so we can take it to the recycling center. I think that's a good idea, especially since we can get a decently-priced battery-powered one that matches the other batteries we already have. So we'll go out tomorrow AM to scope that out. I should probably buy a pair of goggles too honestly. I figure a chainsaw will be useful in general for other yard stuff.
It's been a little surreal though ultimately. We've had branches come down, but usually just small ones, so this has never happened. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened at my parents' house in Oregon, which is surrounded by trees probably 100 feet high. I guess it has once or twice, as my mom told me today, but really, that's a pretty good record overall. One of the interesting things about being a homeowner I guess. We'll just deal with it and move on. I would like to sort out a new clothesline though, as we do use it to hang some things, like the litter mats for the kitties' boxes. We'll figure that out. I'm just glad the house, and the shed, are OK. The squirrels had a field day playing around in the foliage, from what my spouse said, which is cool. Squirrels are massive here and that's been an interesting thing! They were pretty scrawny down in Florida.
I'm pretty tired from this week. We had a really lovely trip to Scottsbluff and environs last week; I should write about it but I'm too out of it to discuss it properly at the moment. It was nice to get out of town, and I took a day off on either side of the trip. I was really grateful to have Monday off, especially after driving a ton on Sunday for our trip home. It still felt like a long week though, so Friday is extremely welcome. My spouse went to go see The Devil Wears Prada 2 with a friend tonight, so I am just hanging out, listening to music, and of course writing this. We have yardwork and such to do tomorrow, but otherwise we'll try to do some fun stuff too. And my spouse needs a new office chair, so we may go to IKEA on Sunday to look at chairs there. A lot more chill than last weekend, even though we had a blast on our trip. I'm happy to be home a lil and hanging out with our lovely kitties.
Anyways I am gonna chill tonight and do something else, I dunno what. My spouse should be home before too long. And they're back! Thanks for reading, friends <3
