So I finished The Secret World of Alex Mack and loved it, and thought I'd dive into another show. My hard drive is teeming with TV shows, so why not? I decided on Farscape. I've heard about it for years, and while it's not quite as massively popular as something like Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5, two other sci-fi shows I love, I imagine it has a following. It came out in 1999 and somehow in all this time I've never learned anything about it. It's a piece of pop culture that completely passed me by, except in name (and the logo is pretty iconic). This is as good a time as any to check it out! And somehow the Hensons are involved? Muppets in space? Hmm.
I watched the pilot and it was... rough, as pilots often are. Lots of jargon, infodumps, &c. But I stuck with it, as it was growing on me even throughout that first episode. I don't know any of the cast, which is fine (mostly the same for B5, and BSG too). I like new (to me?) people. It starts out with an impending shuttle launch at Cape Canaveral. I really thought it would be some stuffy military show all set on Earth. Nope. Thankfully wrong there. It gets weird, quickly and delightfully. And about midway through episode 2, I was all in. I've now watched 4 episodes and I really love it so far. I have a podcast as a companion piece, So Farscape, and that's been fun so far (but oddly censored/bleeped? is it stylistic or are there sweary Patreon perks? I have no idea). I love a good companion podcast.
I imagine I'll be watching through it pretty quickly. It's 4 ~20-episode seasons and while these are '90s episodes (and therefore ~50min each), I still think it'll be a breeze, especially since I'm watching it on my own. My spouse and I watch series together, here and there, but it really depends on what it is. They most recently watched through BSG with me and that's probably the last long series we've done (we watch a lot of YouTube and such usually, fluffy stuff). And I've been amassing a lot of other weird, old, forgotten stuff because of the YT series Nick Knacks, which I will plug at every opportunity (I love it so much!). So, more interesting stuff to come, but Farscape will be my focus for the foreseeable future. I do need to get back to the '60s Gumby, though, as that's been hanging out in my USB DVD player for awhile now. And I'm excited to revisit the '80s Gumby episodes. I remember loving those as a kid.
In any case, I'll probably be writing about my Farscape thoughts in a piece on here at some point, and of course on the fediverse a little more regularly. It's fun getting into a show nearly 30 years later. I love new-to-me stuff and then ideally introducing others to it. I would love to watch B5 with my spouse sometime, but that's quite an ask, and I don't know if they'd be into it. But it's a dream. I like sharing the things I love with the people I love. Always have, always will. And I love them sharing things with me as well, even though I'm not always interested in them, but I want to try!
I don't have enough time to watch an episode tonight. After I did my PT exercises, I had about an hour left before I needed to feed the girls. And now we're at about 40min. So I'll do something until 9, then feed the girls, then I'll read more. I love reading. I'll have to write about my m.o. for reading these days, just for fun. I have kind of a system worked out that keeps it fresh and keeps the variety, which is much-needed in such endeavors. Thanks for reading, friends <3
